A fairly new quilt design, and becoming
very popular, the Diamond Star Fan pattern makes a pieced patchwork
quilt. And, Rachel Smucker of Smuckers Quilts notes that there is a great
deal of quilting, but that just makes the Diamond Star Fan a
beautiful finishing touch for any bed (or wall, as it makes a nice
wallhanging also).
Another similar and popular pattern that
can be found at Smuckers Quilts is the Hershey Star. It also contains a
great deal of quilting with much intricate stitching to fill the open
white spaces.
Rachel choose colors and orders the
fabrics for the quilts in her shop. The quilting is then done by one of
approximately 40 to 50 local Amish and Mennonite ladies who work from
their homes. Rachel refers to the production of the quilts as "a
sharing thing" and is happy that "quilting gives a lot of ladies
jobs."
Drive down the peaceful, scenic lane and
buy a quilt right off a working Amish dairy farm. The shop is filled with
king, queen and twin sized quilts, as well as wallhangings, quillows,
pillows and other crafts. And, you can order a special request quilt, but
expect to wait 4-6 months since the production of a quilt is very time
consuming!
Smuckers
Quilts is located just off Rt. 23 on North Groffdale Road, west of New
Holland, and is open Monday through Saturday, but closed on Sundays.
